> Regarding the four kinds of protection, Jing says: as for protection of the objective sphere, one protects oneself against the objective sphere before oneself so that the mind does not scatter. As for protection against defilements, one does not produce greed or sorrow toward the objective sphere before oneself; defilement is the general \[term\]. The entanglements and latent tendencies, as active mental states and seeds, are respectively protected against as particularities: when defilements do not arise, it is called protecting against entanglements; because entanglements do not arise, they do not perfume and form seeds, which is called protecting against latent tendencies. Alternatively, as for protection against defilements, the statement "when acting in an equanimous position and wandering, being free from greed and sorrow toward the objective sphere, etc.": when one produces preliminary practice at the position of right concentration, being free from greed and sorrow while guarding the eye faculty is called protecting against entanglements; realizing protection of the faculties is protecting against latent tendencies: in a state of scattered mind, because the eye faculty is guarded and entanglements do not arise, the seeds of defilement lack conditions and do not arise, so one only then realizes that protection of the eye faculty is \[protection against\] latent tendencies.
