> Thirty-seventh, explaining that the Tathāgata's divine eye universally operates across all realms. 4. 'Directly seeing sentient beings dying and being born without an intermediate state': Jing says: The desire and form realms definitely have an intermediate state, but the formless realms have no intermediate state; how then can the divine eye see the formless realm? The Tathāgata's divine eye sees the place where the death-existence in the lower two realms ceases, and without an intermediate state arising, knows they are born in the formless realm. Tai says: Sentient beings in the desire and form realms with swift and sharp karma also have no intermediate state, and the Buddha sees them all. Another explanation: The Buddha also knows the dying and being born of the retinues of sentient beings in the formless realm where no intermediate state arises.
