> Regarding establishing the substance of the stages, the Commentary gives three explanations. The first explanation states: these three stages are established with respect to their conjunction before and after the two \[factors of investigation and reflection\] into the mindless stage; the first two stages are stated to be named the stages with mind, and therefore one knows that all form and other factors of the lower stages are entirely named the stage without investigation and without reflection. The second master states: these three are established with respect to freedom from desire for the two; therefore, since in this fascicle, by being free from the defilement of investigation and reflection it is named the stage without investigation and without reflection, one therefore knows that according to what is appropriate, possessing those defilements makes them named the first two stages. Third is the correct view: these three are established solely with respect to realm and stage. In this fascicle it is said that the desire realm and the first dhyāna, whether in absorption or by birth, are named the stage with investigation and with reflection, and so forth; therefore one knows they are established solely on the basis of realm and stage. Refuting and rejecting the previous masters as both incorrect, the harmonization of those passages is entirely as stated there.
