> Furthermore, with respect to the paratantra there are two kinds of conceptualization (parikalpa), existing conceptually in accordance with the manifest grasping of that cognitive mind. The first is conforming to cognition; the second is conforming to the dormant tendencies of habitual conditioning—perfumed into seeds by virtue of what is parikalpita. Tai says: For example, when human beings and the like, conforming to verbal expression and cognition, conceptualize the existence of dharmas, this is called 'conforming to cognition'—the grasping of the parikalpita nature. As for cattle, sheep, and the like, since beginningless time in the past they were once human beings and the like, habituated to nominal conventions, and their conceptualization conforming to cognition perfumed seeds, which are called 'habitual conditioning'. Through the power of dormant tendencies, although cattle, sheep, and the like do not cognitively comprehend nominal conventions, their grasping of dharmas is no different from those who do cognitively comprehend nominal conventions.
