> Next, distinguishing based on feeling: furthermore, "pleasure" refers to the state when neither-painful-nor-pleasurable feeling is present. Master Jing says: "When neutral feeling arises, not being suffering is also called pleasure." Master Tai says: "Neither-painful-nor-pleasurable feeling is tranquility, hence it is called pleasure." "Followed by pleasure" refers to the state when painful feeling is present: although there is suffering at that time, later upon encountering agreeable conditions, pleasure arises, so it is called "followed by pleasure." "Pervaded by joy and pleasure" refers to the state when pleasure is present. "Not permanently departed from pleasure" is because in all states it is accompanied by the seeds of pleasure. "Contrary to this, called the distinctions of suffering": one should state that "suffering" is the state when neither-painful-nor-pleasurable feeling is present; "followed by suffering" is the state when pleasure is present; "pervaded by grief and suffering" refers to the state when painful feeling is present; "not permanently departed" is because in all states it is accompanied by the causes of suffering.
