> Regarding the passage "Furthermore, birth-defilement is perfumed and generated by the force of karma and afflictions," and so forth: birth-defilement arises through karma-defilement, and the arising of karma-defilement is through affliction-defilement; therefore it is said to be perfumed and generated by them. The substantial entity of karma is volitional formations (saṃskāra). The initial cause takes ignorance as its substantial entity. Although all afflictions are initial causes of karma, ignorance alone has eleven superior factors, which is why it is singled out for exposition as the object, etc., as detailed in the sūtra. The Kośa says: "If cause were not stated for ignorance, saṃsāra would have a beginning; if fruition were not stated for old age and death, saṃsāra would have an end. From affliction arise affliction and karma; from karma arises the entity; from the entity arise entities and afflictions. The rationale of the factors of existence is only this; hence the twelve factors are a beginningless cycle." The Supplementary Commentary says: "The substantial entity of birth-defilement is defiled by two conditions: karma and afflictions. Karma is defiled by the single condition of afflictions. Therefore what is produced is called initial ignorance. Ignorance does not arise from being defiled by attention; for this reason improper attention is not stated to be the beginning of dependent origination."
