> Jing says: “The five uninterrupted karmas are discussed with reference to their fixed destination. In the various sūtras and treatises, it is mostly stated that they are experienced in the next life; but in actual principle, they generally include retribution experienced in the present life, the next life, and subsequent lives. For example, if one commits multiple heinous acts, then in the present body one first experiences minor suffering, and in the body of the next life one experiences severe suffering. If the karmic momentum is not yet exhausted, dying in hell and being reborn back into hell functions in sense as retribution experienced in subsequent lives. Therefore, the eighth fascicle of the Abhidharma\[samuccaya-bhāṣya\] states: ‘As that sūtra says: “Due to uninterrupted karma, one repeatedly dies and is reborn in hell, experiencing the great suffering of maturation.”’ The later Supplement (補闕) states: ‘Such heinous karma also obtains present fruition; because the suffering is minor, it is not spoken of from the initial stage as being designated “experienced in the present life”; taking the heaviest as primary, it is merely called “experienced in the next life”.’ Ji also explains: ‘This refers to the fact that because one committed a heinous crime, one is killed or the like in the present life, and so it is called “experienced in the present life”; while the other refers to falling into the Avīci \[hell\] and the like in the next life, which is called “experienced in the next life”; thus there is also no contradiction.’”
