Future birth, old age, and death are named 'having causes' because the seven links are the causal dharmas for them. Birth, old age, and death are named 'suffering with causes' because they have the preceding causes. The three links of craving, grasping, and existence are adjacent to these two, and by association are named 'suffering' because they possess the preceding causal dharmas. The Abhidharma states: 'At the time of cause there are the projecting and the projected; at the time of fruition there are the producing and the produced. What matures and transforms is named fruition.' Therefore, craving, grasping, and existence are also designated with the name 'fruition,' because they arise only when the fruition is about to mature and transform.
