> Furthermore, there are 'ten kinds of faults based on transgressing the moral discipline (śīla), as extensively explained in the sūtras': as in having no remorse due to upholding the precepts, mental peace due to no remorse, pliancy due to mental peace, joy due to pliancy, concentration due to joy, attaining wisdom due to concentration, seeing things as they really are due to wisdom, and so forth—ten kinds of virtues; reversing these gives the ten kinds of faults. Alternatively, the grief and suffering arisen from violating the ten precepts of a novice (śrāmaṇera) may be taken as the ten faults; because they are violated from the outset, only ten are spoken of, as one is thereby unable to receive full ordination.
