> I now maintain that this is not so. That sūtra's 'sanmati' is precisely what is now termed samāhita, translated here as 'equipoise' (dengyin); what it calls 'sanmei' was formerly translated as 'correct reception' (zhenggshou), which is what is now termed samādhi, translated as 'equipoise' (dengchi). Because their two meanings differ, the respective terms in the successive stages obliquely complement and illuminate each other. I only fear that Master Wonhyo did not distinguish the two characters di and ti, and thus raised this objection erroneously. Furthermore, upon checking the newly translated ten-fascicle \*Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra\*, the concentrations of the ten stages are all termed samādhi; this is merely a difference in the translators' understanding of the phonetic sounds.
