> Regarding 'because of abandoning a portion of all afflictions and not being definitive, it is called partial nirvāṇa': pure absorption, taintless absorption, and attached absorption are called portions; abandoning that attached absorption is called 'abandoning a portion of all afflictions'. Because it possesses the meaning of tranquility, it is called nirvāṇa; because it is conditioned, swift, and fluctuating, and not the definitive, motionless tranquility of the unconditioned, it is called partial nirvāṇa. The essences of pure and taintless absorptions are conditioned and not actually nirvāṇa, but based on their lack of afflictions, they bear a slight resemblance to that nirvāṇa; because it is not definitive, it is called partial nirvāṇa. Alternatively, because active afflictions in the four pure dhyānas are partially abandoned, but their seeds are not yet abandoned and one subsequently falls back and is reborn, it is not definitive, and is therefore called partial nirvāṇa.
