- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [5.196](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1828.5.196)

> Bei says: when initially cultivating the eight liberations, the preliminary means comprise three stations of mastery, but they are not the three stations of mastery among the eight stations of mastery; hence it does not say eight. Ji says: "contemplating forms" refers to the former four stations of mastery; "if as contemplated" refers to the latter four stations of mastery. Because one contemplates form according to the previously contemplated object distinctions, the eight stations of mastery are then perfected. With the three liberations as cause, it says that the three stations of mastery are subsumed under the path of preliminary means of the three liberations, not merely three.
