> Regarding 'the desire to encroach upon things unpossessed', Tai says: toward singing and dancing, one only desires to watch them and thus engages in mutual contention, not desiring to make them one's own possession; or toward courtesans, attendants, and the like, one encroaches on another only for temporary enjoyment, not desiring to take them as one's own wives, concubines, slaves, or possessions—this is called unpossessed desires. Regarding 'the views of the Vārṣaganya (rain assembly)': according to the customs of the Western regions, one year has three seasons, called the three terms. From the sixteenth day of the first month to the end of the fifteenth day of the fifth month is called the hot term, because at this time it is extremely hot. From the sixteenth day of the fifth month to the end of the fifteenth day of the ninth month is called the rainy term, because at this time it rains heavily. From the sixteenth day of the ninth month to the end of the fifteenth day of the first month is called the cold term, because at this time it is extremely cold. The Sāṃkhya originally arose during the rainy term and was therefore called 'Rain' (Varṣa); his followers were called the 'Rain Assembly' (Vārṣagaṇya). Contentious discourse arises based on facts.
