> Third, 'citing examples' is general; 'similar class' and 'dissimilar class' are distinct. Regarding the generally stated dharma, separately citing one similar instance and one dissimilar instance constitutes two examples. In the Abhidharmasamuccaya, fascicle sixteen, the reason is treated generally and not divided; within the example, it also only sets forth the general; but because that which establishes has eight members that must not be disrupted, in establishing the meaning, application (upanaya) and conclusion (nigamana) are further added. This treatise, because application and conclusion are not separate from the reason and example, does not divide them separately; that treatise, because establishing the meaning adds clarity, establishes them separately; there is no contradiction. Dignāga eliminates them from that which establishes because application and conclusion are not separate from the example. The Abhidharmasamuccaya, because the meaning of application is repeated and increased, separates them as that which establishes; the increase and decrease between general and distinct in citing examples is likewise so. It is also said that for the debater, the two such as direct perception have a distant role in bringing about understanding in another, which the ancients called that which establishes; while the proponent and opponent directly bring about understanding only in themselves, hence Dignāga and others do not consider them that which establishes; there is no contradiction.
