- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [5.46](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1828.5.46)

> In these fourth and fifth sections, the distinction between having mind and lacking mind is examined, yet it is not based on the differences of having or lacking mind in the physical embodiment; hence having mind and lacking mind is distinguished relying only on the five stages. In the stage with investigation and with reflection, mindless sleep and mindless fainting are not called the 'mindless stage' because sleep and fainting are not invariably mindless; whereas in the stage without investigation and without reflection, the attainment of non-conception and so forth are invariably mindless. Furthermore, sleep and fainting are called 'stages with mind' with reference to the principal consciousness, while the attainment of non-conception and so forth are called 'mindless stages' with reference to the guest consciousness, being spoken of by way of elliptical brevity.
