> However, in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra and elsewhere, Śreṇika asks: 'Does the body precede afflictions, or do afflictions precede \[the body\]? If the body precedes, why is it said that only because of afflictions can there be a body? If afflictions precede, by whom were they made, and where do they abide?' The Buddha answered Śreṇika: 'Although afflictions and the body are simultaneous and neither precedes nor follows, only on account of afflictions can there be a body, and never because of a body can there be afflictions.' Although the non-Buddhist posed the challenge in terms of a first beginning, the Buddha answered him in terms of beginninglessness; therefore one knows there is no increase.
