> In the twelfth \[section\], 'Absence of Obstacles,' it first generally identifies the two absences of obstacles, internal and external; then it gives a detailed explanation, followed by a summary. In the subsequent detailed distinction, there are two parts: first, distinguishing obstacles; second, reversing them to show the absence of obstacles. In the former there are three parts: first, detailed; next, summarized; finally, concluding. In the detailed part, it first distinguishes internal obstacles and then external obstacles. Internal obstacles are twofold: first, lacking requisites, which increases greed, anger, and delusion; second, suffering from many illnesses due to past karma and present disparate causes; third, having many affairs and various attachments. External obstacles are also twofold: first, relying on bad companions and lacking the instruction of good teachers; second, living in a bad place that is noisy day and night, or having offensive tactile sensations, or having many frights. In the summary, it summarizes the previous two obstacles, internal and external, distinguishing them into three: namely, obstacles to preliminary practice (prayoga), obstacles to seclusion (viveka), and obstacles to tranquility (śamatha). These three are all named after what they obstruct.
