> In the \*Nirvāṇa Sūtra\*, three are for robes, three for food, and six for dwelling places, making twelve: refuse rag robes, woolen robes, and the three robes count as robes; begging alms, one sitting, and one measured portion count as three for food; the dwelling places are explained as in the Vinaya. In the \*Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa\*, two are for robes, five for food, and five for dwelling places, making twelve: the two for robes are patchwork robes and \[plain\] color; the five for food are subsumed under one sitting; the five dwelling places are because 'dwelling in whatever seat' is excluded. Some sūtras speak of sixteen \*dhūtas\*, and some places speak of eleven \*dhūtas\*, yet most places speak of twelve.
