> If one severs the seventh grade \[of defilement\], it solely reduces half a rebirth; out of fourteen rebirths, it solely reduces one rebirth. If one severs the eighth and ninth grades, together they reduce half a rebirth out of seven rebirths, and together reduce one rebirth out of fourteen rebirths. Because when the defilements of both the eighth and ninth grades remain, one is termed merely 'one seed' (ekabījika), and when one has severed the eighth and stays in the ninth one is also termed 'one seed,' one therefore knows that among the lower three grades, the superior grade solely moistens and reduces \[rebirth\], while the intermediate and inferior grades together reduce it. In the same manner, for the intermediate three grades and the superior three grades, either the superior grade solely moistens and reduces \[rebirth\] while the intermediate and inferior grades together moisten and reduce \[rebirth\]—since having severed the superior grade of defilement three rebirths remain, and further severing the fourth grade of defilement two rebirths remain, one therefore knows that among the intermediate three, the superior grade solely moistens and reduces one rebirth; severing the fifth grade entails severing the sixth grade, which further reduces one rebirth out of the seven rebirths, so one knows that within the intermediate three grades, the inferior and intermediate grades together moisten and reduce one rebirth. Just as among the intermediate three grades, the superior grade solely moistens and reduces one rebirth while the intermediate and inferior grades together moisten and reduce one rebirth, one may infer by analogy that among the superior three grades, the power of the superior grade is strong, solely moistening and reducing two rebirths out of seven rebirths, while the intermediate and inferior are weak in power, together moistening and reducing two rebirths.
