> 4. In explaining the fulfillment of what was to be done, where it states: 'All attentions cognizing an image are fully completed... up to... because of attaining āśrayaparavṛtti, surpassing the image,' and so forth: the meaning here is that both images with and without conceptual differentiation have not yet realized reality and both possess images; entering the path of seeing is called reaching the limit of phenomena, exhausting the nature as it is. Now reaching non-learning, with what was to be done fulfilled, one attains āśrayaparavṛtti and realizes the perfect taintless state, surpassing images, so the taintless mind has no images. The Abhidharma\[-samuccaya\] states: 'Images without conceptual differentiation refer to the cognition directly realizing reality and the subsequently attained \[cognition\].' This takes its name from the cause, being called images without conceptual differentiation; in reality, because the two cognitions are taintless, both are without images. Possessing or lacking conceptual differentiation belongs either to samādhi or to wisdom; although the text of the Abhidharma treatise is complete, the text on images is incomplete. Since there are three explanations in the West \[India\], one may adopt whichever meaning one pleases. Those who say the taintless mind has images explain this text's 'surpassing the image' as surpassing the images of defiled clinging to phenomena, not that the taintless mind lacks images. Furthermore, the position that there are no images takes this text as proof. An examination of that text should be as in that treatise; this text directly proves the doctrine that the causal taintless mind has images while the fruitional taintless mind has no images.
