> Below, it cites a discourse to substantiate it: regarding "all rely on the four paths of serenity," etc., Tai, Ji, and others equally say: this is explained with two meanings: first, the place where corpses are left is solitary and devoid of people, so it is called "serene." Going to that place is why it is called a "path." Also, the peace and quiescence of nirvāṇa is called "serene"; practicing the contemplation of impurity can lead to nirvāṇa, hence it is called a "path." On the first path of serenity, one sees that corpse having undergone seven days, devoured greedily by birds and the like; by analogy, the body of an object of sensual desire is of the same nature and kind. Bringing in the sūtra to substantiate the treatise, it therefore says "demonstrates." The three lines below are identical to this, and the phrasing of the text is understandable. Third, remedying the third greed: this means that by means of the second, painful impurity, up to the third, inferior impurity, one causes the mind greedy for external inanimate things to be purified. Fourth, remedying the fourth greed: this means that by means of the fourth, impurity of contemplative practice, one causes the mind greedy for the form realm to be purified. Fifth, remedying the fifth greed: this means that by means of the fifth, impurity of defilement, and the sixth, impurity of rapid destruction, one causes greed for physical existence in the three realms to become purified.
