> From 'How does one awaken...' downward, it next explains awakening specifically. Tai says: For example, when the eye consciousness takes blue as an object, this is called direct perception; although ideation is present at the same time, it has no function. When an inquiring mind arises, \[thinking\] 'this blue is not yellow,' this is still a common characteristic, because it takes a nominal dharma as an object; this is called inference. If one says that the entity of this subtle atom is blue, because blue is the entity it is an object of direct perception and does not extend to all blue things, so it is a specific characteristic. If one says 'this is non-non-blue,' apart from blue there is no separate non-non-blue; therefore, being a nominal dharma, it is an object of inference; and because the meaning of non-non-blue pervades all blue things, it is called a common characteristic. Furthermore, this blue has blue as its entity, and its entity does not mutually pervade \[others\]; hence it is a specific characteristic and called an object of direct perception. Non-non-blue is without non-existence, and its entity pervades all; hence it is a common characteristic. Discerning such common characteristics and their names, discerning with mental engagement and contemplating them, one awakens to the ideation aggregate. Simultaneous with this ideation there are definitely consciousness and sensation, but because their function is slight and weak, they are not mentioned.
