> First: precisely in order to sever the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation, one advances further to cultivate the sixteen superior practices. As for the term 'superior practices,' what is its meaning? Master Yuan of old stated: They are called superior practices on account of eight causes and conditions. Master Bei says: Being of the nature of wisdom and not shared with non-Buddhists, they are called superior practices. Now it is explained: because they surpass the preceding path of seeing, they are called superior practices.
