> Because within this support, three supports are clarified: first, gotra; second, capability; third, dharmas conducive to awakening. These three meanings are called 'support'; they are extensively explained like this, and therefore obtain the name 'support'. Now, these three supports are briefly distinguished by three gates: First, distinguishing their essence: the initial support of gotra takes the two gotras as its essence; the support of generating the aspiration takes the great vow as its essence. A vow is an aspiration, and thus it takes adhimukti, chanda, śraddhā, and cetanā together with aspiration. Yet the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says that the latter four pāramitās are the subsequently attained wisdom: this broadly classifies them as wisdom in terms of wisdom's guidance; how could they lack distinct essences? Just as it is said that the first six pāramitās are subsumed under non-conceptual wisdom, how could there not be distinct essences such as dāna and śīla? The support of dharmas conducive to awakening takes the six pāramitās and the thirty-seven dharmas conducive to awakening as its essence. Second, distinguishing the names: there are general and specific names. The general name 'three supports' is because 'three' is a number and 'support' is the meaning; 'support' has three meanings, as explained above. Regarding the specific names, the two gotras are gotra, up to the dharmas conducive to awakening being the third support; therefore, all obtain their names based on their actual entity, or alternatively, all obtain their names from their meaning and function. Third, clarifying the distinctions of stations and stages. (Ce says:) There are two meanings: 1. Strictly speaking, prior to the ten faiths there is only gotra, whereas from the ten faiths onward up to the vajra\[-like concentration\] all three supports are complete; 2. speaking of the three by assigning stations. There are three differing explanations in the Western country: One explanation holds that prior to the ten faiths is named the support of gotra, the ten faiths are the support of generating the aspiration, and from the ten understandings onward are the support of dharmas conducive to awakening. The second says that from beginningless time up to the ten faiths is the support of gotra; the reason for this being that innate and acquired gotras together constitute the support of gotra, from the ten understandings upward to the dedication \[of merit\] is the support of generating the aspiration, and from the first bhūmi upward to the vajra\[-like concentration\] is the support of dharmas conducive to awakening. The third says that dividing the three kalpas yields the three supports: the first asaṃkhyeya \[kalpa\] from the ten faiths onward is the first support, from the first bhūmi upward to the seventh bhūmi is the second support, and from the eighth bhūmi upward, the third asaṃkhyeya \[kalpa\], is the third support.
