> Next, explaining the second dhyāna, regarding "internal supreme serenity": in the Hīnayāna treatises it is faith; when attaining the second concentration, one faithfully knows that all afflictions of the concentration stage can be abandoned, hence faith becomes evident. Now in the Mahāyāna, using equanimity, mindfulness, and clear comprehension to detach from the turbulence of investigation and reflection is called 'internal supreme serenity'. Moreover, because the joyous mind leaps and is not peaceful, it does not obtain the names of equanimity, mindfulness, and clear comprehension; there is a text on this in the twenty-seventh \[fascicle\]. Regarding "born of concentration": this differs from the first dhyāna; that is called 'born of detachment', this is called 'born of concentration'. That one attains the initial detachment from the bonds of the desire realm, hence called 'born of detachment'; this is based on having previously already attained concentration, hence it is said 'born of concentration'. Regarding "joy and bliss: namely, having already attained the desired object and so forth": the bliss of the fundamental first two concentrations is both the feeling of joy, divided into two in meaning: if it pleases the ālayavijñāna side it is called bliss; if it pleases the mental consciousness side it is called joy. Having previously sought joy and bliss to cultivate the second concentration, now one attains the desired object.
