> Explaining the third dhyāna: equanimity, mindfulness, and clear comprehension all counteract joy, unlike the Hīnayāna treatises where clear comprehension guards against the bliss of that stage. Tai says: In the first two concentrations, there is entirely no bliss detached from joy or non-conceptual bliss that pleases the aggregate of mental consciousness; although there is equanimous feeling, it arises alternating with joy, investigation, and reflection, not unbroken equanimity. Ji says: Below the third dhyāna, there is no such bliss or unbroken equanimity; below it there is bliss whose substance is joy, differing in pleasing body and mind. Now in the third dhyāna, pleasing the mind is also called bliss because bliss is consummate, hence it says the lower stages lack this bliss. Although within the lower stages there is equanimity, it does not have a distinct manifest name, and because it is interrupted it is not unbroken equanimity, hence it says 'lacking'; it is not that interrupted equanimity is also lacking, which would be called having no equanimity.
