> Second, explaining the name 'neither perception nor non-perception', within which there are two: first, explaining 'neither perception'; second, explaining 'nor non-perception'. From 'By these causes and conditions, when previously entering the concentration of the stage of nothingness...' down to 'that is, either the perception of something existing or the perception of nothing existing' clarifies 'neither perception'. From the stage of consciousness downward is the perception of something existing; the stage of nothingness is the perception of nothing existing; therefore it is said 'neither perception', which is neither the perception of something existing nor the perception of nothing existing. Now, in the peak of existence, there are not the former two perceptions. The explanation of the two existing perceptions within 'neither perception' is concluded. Now, within 'nor non-perception', it is also not the two non-perceptions; therefore, in the second major section, it clarifies 'nor non-perception' for the second time. There are two non-perceptions: 1. the concentration of non-perception; 2. the concentration of cessation. In these two concentrations, the mind is completely extinguished. Now, the peak of existence is not like this, so it says 'nor non-perception', meaning it is not the two non-perceptive concentrations, because in the peak of existence, subtle perceptions still remain.
