> Ce says: Merit and wisdom are combined and spoken of as six. As for the three of merit: the first two perfections make one, that arisen from dhyāna makes two, and that arisen from vigor makes three. As for the three of wisdom: the sixth makes one, and dhyāna and vigor make one each; hence there are six. If one relies on the Bodhisattva-prātimokṣa Sūtra, the six are the six perfections. Thus that sūtra says: 'What are the six? They are the six pāramitās. If extensively explained, they are immeasurable.' Alternatively, they are said to be twelve, namely each of the six perfections applies to both merit and wisdom. Thus the Bodhisattva-prātimokṣa Sūtra says: 'The causes of merit for a bodhisattva are six, and the causes of wisdom are also six.' Alternatively, they are said to be thirty-six: that is, the six perfections of merit have three times six, which is eighteen, like the six causes of merit and six fruits of merit; wisdom is also like this, so there are thirty-six. Hence the Bodhisattva-prātimokṣa Sūtra says: 'A bodhisattva's cause of merit is both cause and fruit; a bodhisattva's cause of wisdom is both cause and fruit; a bodhisattva's cause of merit is both merit and wisdom; a bodhisattva's cause of wisdom is both wisdom and merit.' Alternatively, they are said to be eighty-four thousand, or exceeding the sands of the Ganges, and so forth; thus it is said to be immeasurable.
