Regarding 'It should be known that herein' down to 'arisen from wisdom': Jing says: First, with respect to prior to the stages, in the defiled position, the eight kinds of maturation substances, maturation causes, and maturation fruits are all generated from defiled merit prior to the stages. If the eight kinds of maturation substances are generated, they are generated from retributive causes. If the eight kinds of maturation causes and maturation fruits are generated, they are generated from cause of equal status. This merit, moreover, is initiated only through the guidance of wisdom, and is also generated from wisdom; these three sovereignties prior to the stages are subsumed under the wholesome roots belonging to the path.
