> Regarding the formation of the desire realm: first, the four heavens of the empty space are formed; afterwards, from "From this point on, there is a great wind disk..." downward, the remaining heavens and the remaining places are produced. The remaining places are divided into two: first, a general explanation of the formation of the mountains, earth, and so forth; afterwards, from "The four great continents..." downward, a specific explanation of the formation of the mountains, earth, and so forth. The first section is divided into ten: 1. producing the wind disk; 2. producing the gold disk; 3. producing the water disk; 4. producing Mount Sumeru; 5. producing the seven golden mountains; 6. producing the four great continents, and so forth; 7. producing the palaces of the asuras; 8. producing the Snow Mountain and Lake Anavatapta; 9. producing the narakas; 10. producing the hungry ghosts and animals. The wind disk spreads upward to form the bottom and spreads outward along the sides to form boundary walls, like a bin holding grain. As for its extent being equal to a trichiliocosm: in the Hīnayāna it is boundless, and its thickness is sixteen hundred million yojanas. This wind is solid and firm; even if struck by a great Mahānagna's vajra club, the club would shatter, while the gold disk would suffer no damage. The Kośa states: the water disk is one billion one hundred and twenty thousand yojanas deep; afterwards, wind arises, strikes the water, and turns it into gold; the gold is three hundred and twenty thousand \[yojanas\] thick, the remaining eight hundred million \[yojanas\] form water, and both the water and gold are one billion two hundred and thirty-four thousand and fifty yojanas in breadth. The Kośa verse says: "In establishing the receptacle world, / The wind disk is at the very bottom; / Its extent is boundless in breadth, / Its thickness is sixteen hundred thousand. / Above it, the water disk is deep: / One billion one hundred and twenty thousand; / The bottom eight hundred thousand \[remain as\] water, / The remainder condenses and becomes gold. / The breadth of this water-and-gold disk, / In diameter, is twelve hundred thousand / Three thousand four hundred and a half; / Its circumference is three times this." Now, in the Mahāyāna, the gold disk is on the bottom and the water disk is on top, which is contrary to that. Moreover, the depths are also different, as will be explained more extensively in the fourth fascicle under the hells. A lakṣa is a hundred thousand.
