> Regarding the water disaster, "in the second dhyāna, co-arising water emerges": it is not that separate clouds arise and rain water down; rather, the water element that previously co-existed with their bodies increases from below, and afterward they all perish together. Or, by the power of karma, it arises spontaneously, hence it is called "co-arising." The wind disaster is also like this. Flames of fire inevitably flare upward, which is why that disaster begins from below; water and wind rely on open space to swirl and pour down, which is why those disasters arise from above. Question: Why is it that only after seven fires does one water disaster occur? Answer: In the second dhyāna, the lifespan of the Parīttābha devas is two kalpas, the Apramāṇābha devas four kalpas, and the Ābhāsvara devas eight kalpas. If a water disaster arose immediately after a single fire, how could the lifespan of those devas reach eight kalpas? From this it is clear that only after seven waters—each preceded by seven fires—does one wind disaster occur. In all, it shows that eight times seven fires and one times seven waters must occur before the wind disaster is completed. In the third dhyāna, the lifespan of the Parīttaśubha devas is sixteen kalpas, the Apramāṇaśubha devas thirty-two kalpas, and the Śubhakṛtsna devas sixty-four kalpas. Eight times seven fires and one times seven waters make one wind. The waters and fires, nine times seven, make sixty-three, and the final single wind disaster makes sixty-four. For this reason, the three disasters have separate kalpas of disintegration. The \*Bodhisattva-gocaropāya-viṣaya-vikurvaṇa-nirdeśa-sūtra\* states: When the wind disaster arises, sentient beings are all born in the fourth dhyāna and above. In the third dhyāna, a disaster of fire and wind arises called saṃghāta; first it blows upon the palaces of the Śubhakṛtsna devas, clashing rain against rain until all are completely scattered and destroyed; next it blows upon the palaces from the Ābhāsvara heaven downward, causing them to collide with one another until they have no form left; next it blows upon the major and minor continents, Mount Sumeru, and the rest, scattering and destroying the trichiliocosm above and below.
