> In the treatise's explanation of the four causes, the second cause states: "Relying on the embrace of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and good spiritual friends." How does this differ from the first condition among the preceding four conditions? In that condition, one merely sees the display of supernormal powers without being embraced with instructions. Here, instruction is direct, and therefore it is a cause; seeing the display of transformations is indirect because there is no instruction, and therefore it is a condition. Hence the two differ. Regarding how the third cause, often generating a mind of compassion toward sentient beings, differs from the fourth condition, saving sentient beings at the end of the kalpa and so forth: in the condition, one merely initiates the arousing of the mind oneself to cause others to arouse the mind; in the cause, undergoing suffering on behalf of others is direct, and therefore it is a cause.
