> The treatise says: "Merit is of three kinds, namely generosity, morality, and patience. Jñāna is of only one kind, namely the sixth pāramitā. Vigor and dhyāna pertain to both the parts of merit and jñāna." As in passages elsewhere: furthermore, the first five are merit and the sixth is jñāna. It is also said that the first three are merit and the lower three are jñāna. Now combining with this, there are in total three mutually conflicting passages: truly, the first five being merit and the sixth being jñāna is correct. Here, the discussion is based on their pervading and spurring, so they pertain to both parts. Moreover, that the first three are merit is settled in principle; that the latter three are prajñā is because vigor and dhyāna pervade and spur prajñā, so they are gathered under prajñā, while their spurring of merit is concealed, so they are not said to pertain to merit. The meaning of pervading and spurring can be understood from the text, as harmonized in the notes to the second fascicle of the Abhidharma-samuccaya-bhāṣya.
