> In the treatise's explanation of the category augmenting up to eight, it states: "The suffering of self-inflicted torment refers to the unbound non-Buddhists"—namely, the Nirgranthas, who hang upside down, pierce their thighs, pluck out their hair, throw themselves into \[fire\], and the like. "A single type of deportment for a prolonged period": sitting, lying down, standing, etc. The latter fifty-five sufferings do not take the nine root ones, but only take the remaining accessory sufferings as they arise; because there are four kinds of suffering in the second category, they can make up fifty-five. In the category augmenting up to ten, it refers to the five kinds of suffering that are the remedies for the five kinds of happiness as previously explained: first, cause; second, feeling; third, the accumulation of suffering's remedies, here called the suffering of merely lacking happiness; fourth, the accumulation of unbroken feeling. The remedy for cause refers to bad karma as the opposite of good karma, and faculties and objects conducive to painful feeling alone as the opposite of the suffering of the cause conducive to pleasant feeling. Second, the happiness of feeling is here reversed to mean the suffering of feeling, which is painful feeling. Third, the happiness of suffering's remedy refers to obtaining food when hungry, etc., now reversed to the suffering of not obtaining it. Fourth, the happiness of the cessation of feeling refers to entering the attainment of cessation, now reversed to suffering due to being in states with mind. Fifth, the happiness of renunciation is the happiness of leaving the household life; therefore the text below says "household", which is the suffering of living at home. "Detachment" refers to obtaining the first dhyāna concentration of the form realm, detaching from the fetters of the desire realm; now, not having obtained the first dhyāna of form, there is the suffering of the desire-realm fetters. "Tranquility" refers to the second dhyāna detaching from the joy of investigation in the first dhyāna; now, not detaching from the first dhyāna, there is the suffering of investigation. The "happiness of bodhi" refers to the three bodhis; now, being in the stage of an ordinary worldling, there is suffering. Therefore, the household, desire-realm fetters, investigation, and ordinary worldling sufferings correspond to them in order. In the previous category augmenting to nine with eight dharmas, it does not speak of suffering, but only speaks of gain and the other \[eight\], because suffering is clarified on this basis, and hence it does not clarify suffering.
