> The treatise says: "Namely, whether it is designated with reference to that, whether it is designated in that, whether it is designated by means of that, and so on, up to whether it is purified by supreme purification." This refers to the ten entrances into illumination of dharmas, as in the Daśabhūmika-sūtra. Here there are seven instances of the word "whether" (若). The first five are each an entrance into illumination; the latter two are divided into five—the sixth is divided into three, and the seventh is divided into two. "Whether it is designated with reference to that" refers to the objective support of sentient beings: because in reality there are no sentient beings, but they are only designated, they are called "sentient beings," and thus it is called "designation." Second, "whether it is designated in that" refers to the objective support of the world: sentient beings dwell in it, but in reality there is no world; it is merely because they dwell in it that it is designated as an objective support. Third, "whether it is designated by means of that" refers to the objective support of dharmas, namely the wholesome and unwholesome dharmas among the eighteen elements and so forth: in reality there are no such dharmas; because of these, one contemplates sentient beings and so forth, so it is called "designated by means of that." Fourth, "whether it is the equal ultimate truth": as in the Daśabhūmika-sūtra, this is the objective support of emptiness. The Dharma Master gives two explanations: the first is emptiness of phenomena, and the second is emptiness of principle, that is, tathatā is called emptiness; this treatise speaks of "equal ultimate truth," so we know it is tathatā. Fifth, "whether it becomes defiled or purified due to affliction or purity" refers to the objective support of consciousness: because consciousness is afflicted or purified, it becomes defiled or purified. Sixth, "whether it is defiled by the afflictions of bondage" refers to the objective supports of the three realms: being defiled by the afflictions bound to the desire, form, and formless realms constitutes three. Seventh, "whether it is purified by supreme purification" refers to wholesome purification and great wholesome purification: wholesome purification refers to the purification of the two vehicles, and great wholesome purification refers to the purification of the Great Vehicle, which makes two. The details are as in the Daśabhūmika-sūtra.
