> The treatise says: "With respect to the four noble truths, they are known as they truly are through ten aspects. All textual expressions, as spoken in the sūtras, should be understood in their characteristics: namely, based on awakening others, based on one's own internal wisdom, based on both loci, and so on, up to being designated as spoken in this way." This refers to the first three, "based on awakening others" and so forth. The Dharma Master gives two explanations: "Based on awakening others": this first phrase means teaching the two vehicles with the doctrine of the four noble truths; because the two vehicles are not the Buddha vehicle, they are spoken of as "others." "Based on one's own internal wisdom": this second phrase means teaching the assemblies of the great lineage; because sentient beings of the great lineage belong to the Buddha's own vehicle, it is named "based on one's own internal wisdom." "Based on both loci": this third phrase means that while the preceding two are distinct teachings, this phrase is the collective teaching for both the Great and Lesser Vehicles. Expounding the four truths for these distinct and collective persons of the two vehicles is named "spoken for this reason." Another explanation: these three phrases are the three turnings of the wheel of the Dharma. "Based on awakening others" is the turning of showing the characteristic, meaning showing the characteristics of the truths to others, saying "this is suffering," up to "this is the path." "Based on one's own internal wisdom" is the turning of realization, saying "this suffering I have already known," up to "this path I have already cultivated." "Based on both loci" is the turning of exhortation, teaching and saying "this suffering I have already known, you should know it," up to "this path I have already cultivated, you should cultivate it." Because of these three turnings, it is named "spoken for this reason"; these constitute three aspects. "Based on the sūtras, vinaya, and mātṛkā, it is named as spoken through this": this refers to the three baskets: sūtras are the sūtras; vinaya is the monastic discipline; and mātṛkā is the treatises (śāstras). Because of these three baskets I expound the four truths, so it is named "spoken through this." Because it pervades the previous three, they are combined into six kinds. "Based on the intrinsic nature of the manifold present sufferings" is the truth of suffering; "based on the nature of the arising of causes of future suffering" refers to the truth of accumulation; "based on the non-arising due to the exhaustion of causes and the exhaustion of those \[effects\]" is the truth of cessation, namely the cessation of the exhaustion of causes and the cessation of the exhaustion of results; "based on the nature of the means for abandoning them through cultivation" is the path. Such four truths are named "spoken in this way." These are the ten aspects.
