> The treatise states: "The abiding of signlessness that is without preparatory effort and without exertion is named the Bhūmi of Determination, because this bhūmi conforms to the third determination." As explained elsewhere above, there are three kinds of determination: 1. determination of spiritual lineage (gotra); 2. determination of the resolve for awakening (cittotpāda); 3. determination following unfailing practice. This is the same as the seventh fascicle of the \*Prakaraṇāryavācā\*. Determination of spiritual lineage is the original Mahāyāna seed. Determination of the resolve refers to entering the first bhūmi; although the ten abidings also give rise to the resolve, it is not yet named determination. Now the eighth bhūmi is named the determination following unfailing practice, because within practice it is without exertion and acts spontaneously. This is the third determination, hence it is called the third determination. There is an explanation saying: This third refers to being on the first bhūmi. We now take the former explanation, as in the text of the \*Prakaraṇāryavācā\*: being on the first bhūmi refers to the time of attaining mastery. Another explanation says: This eighth bhūmi is in the third asaṃkhyeya, like the abiding of maturation, because it gives rise to practice spontaneously and is no longer separated by defiled minds; hence it is named determination.
