> The treatise says: How is this bhūmi posited and established? The Bhūmi with Remainder of Basis excludes one portion of five bhūmis—namely, the Mindless Bhūmi, the Bhūmi Arisen from Cultivation, and the Śrāvaka, Pratyekabuddha, and Bodhisattva Bhūmis; it excludes the Bhūmi without Remainder of Basis entirely; the remaining bhūmis are called with remainder of basis. Among the seventeen bhūmis, according to this text, eleven bhūmis in full and five bhūmis in minor part constitute the substance of this bhūmi. Why is this? Among the five bhūmis, taking the Mindless Bhūmi as an example, there are five states of mindlessness: mindless sleep, the non-conceptual attainment, the cessation attainment, entering the realm of nirvāṇa without remainder of basis, and so forth. Here it takes only the first four states, excluding nirvāṇa without remainder of basis; therefore it says "one portion" is the substance of this bhūmi. Within the Bhūmi Arisen from Cultivation, what is produced through cultivation includes both the conditioned and unconditioned; the unconditioned is the substance of the remainderless basis, which is now excluded, taking the conditioned produced through cultivation. Question: If it is only cultivation, why is there mention of the unconditioned? Answer: If one merely speaks of wisdom from cultivation, that does not take the unconditioned; now, saying "arisen from cultivation," since there is the word "arisen," it therefore extends through to the unconditioned. As for the Śrāvaka and other bhūmis, they universally explain the four truths; within the truth of cessation there is the unconditioned of the exhaustion of causes and the exhaustion of results; now, setting aside the unconditioned of the exhaustion of results, one portion is therefore excluded. The Remainderless Bhūmi is precisely what is excluded in its entirety. Question: The other bhūmis also contain what is not the substance of this bhūmi; why then does it only exclude one portion of these five bhūmis? Answer: The discussion proceeds in accordance with the predominant share. Furthermore, it takes and excludes according to the prominent characteristics; those whose non-substantiality to this bhūmi is hidden are briefly passed over without discussion.
