> Regarding the treatise's explanation of the eighth consciousness, "at the time of approaching death, \[...\] is unreasonable": as stated in the first fascicle, whether withdrawing from above or withdrawing from below, it always reaches the heart before finally relinquishing. Regarding the words "it is not that that mental consciousness at times does not operate": if it is the eighth consciousness, it universally appropriates the parts of the body; when it relinquishes the upper part, the lower part is not yet relinquished, so it has the meaning of both operating and not operating. If it is the sixth consciousness, the meaning is not necessarily so, because it cognizes other objects, and it is not the case that it does not arise in some places; hence it cannot uphold \[the body\]. Furthermore, if it is the eighth, its cognition of objects is subtle; at the time of death, its cognition of objects is unknowable. If it is the sixth consciousness, its cognition of objects and its mode of activity are coarse; if the sixth consciousness could relinquish life, its mode of activity should be coarse, for it is not the case that that mental consciousness at times does not operate. One should formulate an inference: "The consciousness at the time of death must have an object of cognition that is known (thesis), because it is the sixth consciousness (reason), just like in other states (example)." One should further universally deny that the sixth mental consciousness can relinquish life, with the inference: "The sixth mental consciousness is not the mind that relinquishes life-span (thesis), because it is subsumed under the evolving consciousnesses (pravṛttivijñāna) (reason), just like the five consciousnesses (example)." Therefore, we know that the meaning of the eighth consciousness is successfully established. Above, the answer to the second point—the causes and conditions for its existence—is completed. Below, the answer to the broad differentiation of its meanings begins.
