> Regarding the treatise's statement, "Why? Because all conditioned phenomena are momentary, and going from one direction to arrive in another direction is not reasonable": this refutes the Saṃmatīyas and others. However, in formulating the syllogism (prayoga) as before, one should first establish momentary cessation before one can refute the absence of motion. One should first formulate the inference: "Visible form-objects and the like must cease moment by moment, because they are subsumed under the aggregate of form (rūpa-skandha), like a lamp flame or the sound of a bell." Lamp flames and the sound of a bell are commonly accepted by the other party. Only then does one formulate the inference: "No form in this place goes and arrives in another place, because it ceases moment by moment, like a lamp flame and the like." In this way, this reason—"momentary cessation"—is fully established (prasiddha). Regarding "Furthermore, apart from the mere arising of conditioned phenomena, no other real function can be apprehended by the eye, ear, or mind": this also refutes the Saṃmatīya claim of the real existence of motion and function; it also refutes the Sarvāstivādin real function of the atomic nature of action-form (karma-rūpa); and it refutes the real nature of the category of action (karma-padārtha) in the Vaiśeṣika system. Now, generally rejecting them, it says: There is no distinct real function; for just like \[real functions\], the three types of actions apprehended by the eye, ear, and mind are all unapprehended. Although motion and action-form are claimed by them to be apprehended by the eye and the like, this incurs the fault of being unestablished for one party (anyatarāsiddha) against them, because this \[Mahāyāna\] does not accept that the visual consciousness and the like apprehend them. The inference runs: "What you call motion, action-form, and so forth cannot be called something existing apart from conditioned phenomena; they are definitively unapprehended by the eye, ear, and mind; because they are not cognized by the two pramāṇas of perception and inference; like a rabbit's horn and the like." Although mental action ranges through the three natures, taking volition (cetanā) to constitute intimation makes clear the meaning of function and so on. Therefore, one should know that all intimation-actions (vijñapti-karma) are nominal existents. Question: If action within form and the like is nominal—such as the intimation within visible matter—does this intimation negate that the Mahāyāna visual consciousness and the like take it as an object? Western scholars offer two explanations: the five consciousnesses take the nominal as an object by relying on the real, as explained in the commentary on the first fascicle of the Abhidharma-samuccaya-vyākhyā.
