> Among the sixteen kinds of contact, the seventh, "contact involving expanded language": this means that mental consciousness expands language, and because it can initiate speech, it is called contact involving expanded language. Master Tai said: the five consciousnesses and so forth can take real characteristics as objects and speak in accordance with particular characteristics, which is called contact with resistance; mental consciousness possesses discrimination and takes names as its object, so in contrast to the five consciousnesses taking names as condition, it is called contact involving expanded language. Moreover, names, phrases, and syllables are language, and this language expands in relation to objects, hence it is called expanded language; because the mind takes this expanded language as its object, it is called contact involving expanded language. "Illuminated contact" means uncontaminated. "Non-illuminated" means unwholesome and indeterminate. "Neither illuminated nor non-illuminated" means wholesome contaminated contact. "Eight kinds of contemplation": as explained in the "Bodhipakṣyadharma Chapter" of the "Bodhisattvabhūmi," in the contemplation within the aspiration and practice of bodhi, expertly knowing the eight kinds of contemplative practice in the world.
