> The treatise says: 'Ignorance, in brief, serves as a productive cause in five places': First, it can produce doubt, because it can produce doubt concerning the three times; second, it can produce craving, because it can produce the three kinds of craving, internal, external, etc.; third, it can produce improper faith, that is, three kinds of wrong faith regarding cultivation of karma, difference, and co-arising; fourth, it can produce views: through not correctly penetrating the Three Jewels and the Four Truths, it therefore produces the sixty-two views, wrong views, and so forth; fifth, regarding cause and effect, and claiming to have attained the fruits of the śramaṇa when one has not attained them, it produces excessive conceit (abhimāna) among the three kinds. Thus there are seventeen kinds of ignorance. Regarding 'ignorance concerning the six contacts': this means that when one attains the fruits of the śramaṇa by means of the path, one must penetrate the emptiness of the six sense-fields of contact, which is called the exhaustion of name-and-form, before one attains finality; now those non-Buddhists, without penetrating, claim to have penetrated, which is called excessive conceit. The expedient that produces it is attachment to rules and rituals (śīlavrataparāmarśa).
