> The treatise states, and the Great Master says: Either the threefold conventional truth or the fourfold conventional truth—this is the section on the two truths, meaning there are four conventional truths, and the ultimate truths are also like this. Among the conventional truths: 1. the truth of nominal designation without reality; 2. the truth of distinctions according with facts; 3. the truth of established realization; 4. the truth of nominal non-action, meaning nominally establishing the name of ultimate truth, yet without a dharma-entity, because the dharma-entity is ineffable. This text only contains the fourfold conventional truth, without the ultimate truth. As for the earlier establishment of three levels, it is because there are dharmas being delineated; the subsequent establishment of four is because of nominal establishment. In the West, fourfold ultimate truths are also established in mutual correspondence, as explained before: 1. The conventional ultimate truth, whose substance is the previous rational conventional truth. Because it is superior to conventional truth, it is called ultimate; because it establishes dharma distinctions, cause and effect, paratantra nature, and so forth, it is called conventional. 2. The rational ultimate truth, whose substance is the previous conventional truth of realization. Because it contains the sense of attaining the fruit and severing afflictions, it is called rational; because it surpasses the previous rational conventional truth, it is called ultimate; the stages of the ten bhūmis and so forth are this. 3. The ultimate truth of realization, whose substance is the previous conventional ultimate truth, nominally established as ultimate truth. Because it admits the sense of realization, it is called realization; because it surpasses the previous conventional truth of realization, it is called ultimate. 4. The ultimate truth of the ultimate, which is the unestablished truth, the substance of suchness. Because it is an ineffable dharma, it is called ultimate. The realization wisdom of the Śrāvaka vehicle consists of nine wisdoms within realization. Nothing surpasses the previous ultimate truth; because it surpasses the conventional, it is called ultimate. Among the previous conventional truths, the first conventional truth is solely this.
