> The treatise says, "Namely, briefly stated, because of contemplating the causes of purity...": this means, as stated below, "because cognising this name allows one to know the selflessness of dharmas and persons, thus revealing that principle," serving as the cause of purity. "Contemplating own-characteristics" means, as stated below, "because cognising the two kinds of names, the characteristic of a self is unfindable." This is the objective aspect (\*nimittabhāga\*) of the two attachments; now one knows its reality. "Contemplating their causes of defilement" means, as stated below, "not skillfully understanding this name, defilement thereby arises." That is, because their subjective aspect (\*darśanabhāga\*) arises, all dharmas are produced. Another explanation states: the two kinds of names possess three meanings, and are therefore called overshadowing all. First, one who contemplates these names attains purity, serving as their cause of purity; second, knowing that the two names cognise all dharmas themselves; third, knowing that the two names are causes of defiled dharmas. Possessing these three meanings, they are called overshadowing all.
