> As for the "wisdom eye", it is actually not matter (rūpa), but because it belongs to the same category as the eye, it is spoken of here. It is not the one wisdom eye among the five \[eyes\]; it generally combines the wisdom, Dharma, and Buddha \[eyes\] among the five as the wisdom eye here, taking wisdom as its entity, introduced here as a matter of convenience. The "winking eye" is an eye that blinks, such as the eyes of humans and the like. The "non-winking eye" is an eye that does not blink, such as the eyes of dragonflies and the like. The "support-locus eye" is the original fleshly eye; since the transformed eye arises supported by this, it is called the support-locus eye. Alternatively, the physical organs that support the faculty are the support-loci of the eye; conventional usage calls them eyes, so here too it is conventionally designated. The "discriminating ear" is likewise not matter, its entity being wisdom derived from listening and the like; introduced because the ear is spoken of and as a matter of textual convenience, it is intended to reveal that both the eye and the ear possess superior functions. The "elevated listening ear" is an ear that listens to wholesome dharmas, superior dharmas, and meaningful dharmas. The "non-elevated listening ear" is an ear that listens to unwholesome dharmas, inferior dharmas, and meaningless dharmas. In explaining under the body that "it is followed by and pervades all faculties", this clarifies the meaning that the body faculty pervades the \[other\] four faculties.
