釋名中，眼者，梵云斫芻。斫者，行也；芻者，盡也。謂能於境行盡見行，盡見諸色故名行盡。今言眼者，體義當故。　耳者，梵云戍（輸聿反）縷多，此云能聞，如是我聞之聞也。言耳者，體義當故。　舌中，能除飢渴，正是舌根。發言論者，舌之依處，世俗名舌，故以為名。

> In explaining the names: the eye (cakṣus) is called cakṣu in Sanskrit. Cak means to move; ṣu means to exhaust. It means capable of moving exhaustively across objects and seeing exhaustively; seeing all forms exhaustively, it is called moving exhaustively. Now calling it eye is because its entity and meaning correspond. The ear (śrotra) is called śruta (pronounced shūlù) in Sanskrit, which means capable of hearing, the "hearing" of "Thus have I heard". Calling it ear is because its entity and meaning correspond. In the tongue, being able to eliminate hunger and thirst belongs precisely to the tongue faculty. Producing speech and debate belongs to the support-locus of the tongue, which conventional usage names the tongue, so it is taken as its name.
