> The explanation of their tenets has two parts: first general, then specific. The specific rationale is divided into three: first, explaining the grounds for their tenets; next, from "their mental application reflects" downward, stating the tenets; and finally, from "in this way, by designation," concluding the eternal nature of the effect within the cause. Under the grounds for their tenets, "being by nature investigative" means that their nature is prone to much deliberation. "Being by nature contemplative" means that their nature is prone to much deducing. The substance of the former is volition (cetanā), and the substance of the latter is wisdom (prajñā). "Abiding in the stage of investigation and abiding in the stage of self-eloquence": "stage" refers to the support. Relying internally on coarse and subtle examination (vitarka and vicāra) and outwardly giving rise to verbal eloquence, they reside in the stage of ordinary beings and in the stage of conjecturing; hence they form such tenets. The first four arise from dharmas and the latter two from stage; this is because they possess those dharmas and reside in those stages.
