> 15. The forty-four knowledges: the text has two parts. First, it explains the knowledges; later, in connection with explaining that consciousness takes objects, it separately reveals that the sixth mental consciousness can perform contemplation through knowledge, and no matter what realm one is in, it can always observe, because its modes of activity are universal. That is: the suffering of aging-and-death, the origin of aging-and-death, the cessation of aging-and-death, and the path leading to the cessation of aging-and-death; the remaining eleven branches are all contemplated in this way, forming forty-four. Ordinary persons contemplate this prior to reversing course upon reaching consciousness. As for "if born in the form or formless realms, with the exception of their lower stages, all are present before them just as in the desire realm": this follows the rational approach that in the upper two realms one does not give rise to all the various consciousnesses of the lower stages, just as in the desire realm one similarly gives rise to the upper mental consciousness without any obstruction. Reading the flow of the text at length, the doctrinal path is also far-reaching.
