> The three characteristics are: 1. arising from the prior limit into the middle limit; 2. arising from the middle limit into the subsequent limit; 3. proceeding from the middle limit either toward transmigration or toward ultimate purification. The first two are called transmigration, and the latter is cessation. Transmigration conforms to origination; cessation conforms to cessation. The past is called the prior limit, the present is called the middle limit, and the future is called the subsequent limit. In the present, if one does not feel aversion and revulsion, one proceeds toward transmigration; if one feels aversion and revulsion, one proceeds toward purity. The Cheng Weishi Lun states: 'The ten causes and two fruits definitely belong to different lifetimes.' Following this, the present treatise establishes dependent origination across two lifetimes. That \[treatise\] also states: 'Among the causes, the first seven are either different from or the same \[lifetime\] as craving, grasping, and existence; as for two, three, and seven, each definitely belongs to the same lifetime.' In this way, dependent origination across the three limits is revealed. Here, it merely refutes the Hīnayāna dependent origination as definitively established across three lifetimes and displays it based on two lifetimes, though not definitively only so; the past seven, present three, and future two act as karma of subsequent retribution, ripening the vipāka.
