> Seventh, distinctions in abandoning obstacles: Fascicle twenty of the Prakaraṇāryavācā speaks of counteracting six obstacles. 1. The obstacle to transformations, eliminated by the first two. One is able to transform and manifest due to contemplating light as exquisite and unimpeded, and attaining mastery over being few, many, and so forth. 2. The obstacle to dwelling in supreme bliss in the present life, eliminated by the third. The Abhidharmasamuccaya states: it can sever the obstacle to the transformation of clean and unclean forms, and the obstacle of defilements arising therein. This obstacle refers to the preparatory effort in transforming clean forms, which is incompatible with transforming unclean forms. Its substance is stiff, coarse, and indeterminate in nature, and is called an affliction. 3. The obstacle to going and returning, eliminated by the fourth. Because empty space is unobstructed with respect to forms, having used this as an expedient, one enters the fundamental stages of the four form dhyānas, freely going and returning. 4. The obstacle to inducing superior virtues such as non-contention, eliminated by consciousness. Since those virtues have consciousness as their substance, having used this as an expedient, one arouses the fourth dhyāna and gives rise to various virtues. 5. The obstacle of the outflows and existence: outflows refers to afflictions; existence refers to the peak of existence. These are the two dharmas of formless delusions and suffering, eliminated by the sixth and seventh deliverances. The sixth deliverance directly eliminates them; the seventh deliverance, having eliminated them, puts them far away. 6. The obstacle to the ultimate peaceful dwelling, eliminated by the eighth, because the attainment of cessation is peaceful and an extremely supreme dwelling. Fascicle fifteen states: regarding the latter five deliverances, it only says that they can induce the attainment of the cessation of perception and feeling; this is based on the stage of fulfillment, and is also not contradictory.
